An avid explorer and researcher, Dr. Burton has been part of a number of archaeological and historical expeditions.  In 1999, he worked as an excavator at Banias.  In 2000, he was also part of the first team to excavate the Presidio de San Saba in Menard, Texas.  He has been a surveyor or excavator on numerous archaeological ventures on Spanish, pioneer, and Native American sites in Texas, as well as the director of an ongoing archaeological and historical survey of the Long Meadows site near Lampasas, Texas.  In 2009, Dr. Burton conducted extensive research on Greco-Roman Banias at the Dumbarton Oaks Library for his dissertation.
